Course Description

Spain combines a large economy, a rich culture, and a growing technology and startup ecosystem particularly in Madrid and Barcelona. Its work permit system has been modernised significantly in recent years, with a new fast track for highly skilled professionals (the International Teleworking Visa and the Ley de Startups 2023 changes adding new angles). This course covers Spain's standard work permit and residence authorisation process for employed workers, as well as the newer tech and talent friendly routes.

    Module 1: Spain Work Permit Framework and Governing Authorities Autorización de Residencia y Trabajo (work and residence authorisation) explained, employer application to the Delegación del Gobierno or Secretaría de Estado de Migraciones, UGE CE (Large Business Unit) for qualified worker permits, Catálogo de Ocupaciones de Difícil Cobertura (shortage occupation catalogue) and how it affects the labour market test, and overview of newer innovation friendly routes.

    Module 2: Standard Work Permit Application by Employer Employer's application at the competent immigration authority, labour market test (Situación Nacional de Empleo) requirement, required employer documents (company registration, employment contract, proof of financial capacity to hire), required worker documents (qualifications, criminal record, passport), and processing timelines.

    Module 3: Highly Qualified Worker Route and Ley de Startups Spain's route for highly qualified professionals (no labour market test required for specific occupations), Ley de Startups 2023 provisions for tech talent (fast tracked international remote worker visa, startup founder route), salary thresholds, and how these routes differ from the standard work permit.

    Module 4: Visa, Arrival, TIE and Residence Rights Type D national visa application at the Spanish consulate after permit approval, arrival in Spain, NIE (Foreigners Identification Number) registration at the National Police, TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero) residence and work card, Padrón municipal registration, healthcare access through the SNS, and work permit renewal.
