Course Description

Portugal's permanent residency pathway is one of Europe's most accessible and desirable for internationally mobile professionals and investors. After 5 years of legal residence whether through a work permit, the D7 Passive Income Visa, the Golden Visa, a digital nomad permit, or another category foreign nationals can apply for a permanent residence permit that gives them full long term stability in an EU country. And after just 5 years of legal residence, Portuguese citizenship becomes available. This course teaches immigration professionals the complete Portugal permanent residency and citizenship pathway.

    Module 1: Portugal Permanent Residency Framework and Qualifying Routes AIMA (Agência para a Integração, Migrações e Asilo) as the governing authority, the 5 year qualifying residence period, which residence categories count toward permanent residency (work permit, D7, ARI Golden Visa, student visa, family reunification), which periods do not count (tourist stays, Schengen short stays), and the EU Long Term Resident Permit versus the Portuguese Permanent Residence Permit two options available after qualifying.

    Module 2: Application Requirements and Documentation Application to AIMA for permanent residence, required documents (current and historical residence permits and visa records, proof of 5 years of continuous legal residence, passport, criminal record from home country and Portugal, proof of sufficient income to sustain yourself, Portuguese language proficiency at A2 level), biometric enrollment, and processing timelines.

    Module 3: Portuguese Language Requirement and A2 Certification A2 level Portuguese requirement for permanent residency, approved language tests (CIPLE — Certificado Inicial de Português Língua Estrangeira), exemptions from the language requirement (age, health condition), where to take the CIPLE test in Portugal and at Portuguese consulates abroad, preparation resources, and what A2 level actually requires in practice.

    Module 4: Citizenship Eligibility and The Portuguese Passport Portuguese citizenship by naturalisation after 5 years of legal residence (one of the shortest qualifying periods in the EU), citizenship application requirements (language certificate, clean criminal record, ties to the Portuguese community), the Portuguese passport as one of the world's strongest travel documents (visa free access to over 185 countries including the USA), dual citizenship permitted by Portugal, and how to plan the citizenship timeline alongside the permanent residency process.
