Living in France as a Foreigner: Your Residence Card Now Costs More

If you are a student, worker or family member living in France on a residence permit, you know the routine: the appointment, the documents, the wait, and the tax stamp. In 2026, that stamp became much more expensive.
The 2026 finance law raised several fees for foreigners, with the new amounts in force from 1 May 2026. A first residence permit at the standard rate now costs 350 euros in total, instead of 225 euros. The fee to apply for French nationality jumped from 55 euros to 255 euros. Here is the full picture, so you can plan before your next application.
| Application | Before 1 May 2026 | From 1 May 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| First permit, standard rate | 225 euros | 350 euros |
| First permit, reduced rate | 75 euros | 150 euros |
| Renewal, standard rate | 225 euros | 250 euros |
| Renewal, reduced rate | 75 euros | 100 euros |
| Stamp duty on issue, renewal, duplicate or change | 25 euros | 50 euros |
| Nationality application stamp | 55 euros | 255 euros |
| Provisional residence authorisation | Free | 100 euros |
| Exchange of a foreign driving licence | Free | 40 euros |
The reduced rate applies to some groups, including students, seasonal workers, au pairs, trainees and certain holders of a private and family life card, such as people joining family. Even for them, the cost of a first card has doubled, from 75 euros to 150 euros.
If you arrived with a long stay visa that works as your first residence permit, its online validation fee also rose, from 200 euros to 300 euros of tax. Check the exact amount for your category on the official website before you buy your stamp.
For a couple renewing standard cards, the bill is now 500 euros. For a family where one parent is applying for a first card and the other is applying for nationality, the total can pass 600 euros before any translation or document costs. These are not small amounts, so it is worth planning a few months ahead.
Imagine Amina, a nurse from Tunisia, arriving in France with her husband. She applies for her first multiyear card at the standard rate, which now costs 350 euros. Her husband joins her under family reunification and pays the reduced rate of 150 euros for his first card. Two years later, they both renew: 250 euros for her and 100 euros for him. Over those two years, the family has paid 850 euros in permit fees alone, before translations, photos and travel to appointments.
Students face a similar pattern. A student who arrives with a long stay visa pays for its validation online, then pays again for each later renewal of the student card. If you change status, for example from student to employee, the new card is usually charged at the rate of the new category.
These examples show why a calendar is your best friend. Note your card expiry date, the date you can start your renewal and the fee you expect to pay. Saving a little each month makes the bill much easier when it arrives.
