China Without a Visa: French Travellers Have Until 31 December 2026

Blog Image

Since December 2023, French travellers have been able to fly to Beijing, Shanghai or Chengdu without queueing for a visa. For tourists, students on short trips and business people, it changed everything. Trips that once needed weeks of paperwork could be booked on a Friday evening.

But this freedom has an end date. The current policy is set to expire on 31 December 2026. As of October 2026, China had not announced an extension for 2027. If you are dreaming of Chinese New Year in Beijing or a spring trip to Yunnan, here is how to plan without being caught out.

How the Policy Works Today

French passport holders can enter China without a visa for business, tourism, visiting family or friends, exchange visits and transit, and stay up to 30 days per entry. You still pass normal border checks, so carry proof of your return ticket and accommodation. Work, study for a long period and journalism are not covered and still need the right visa.

How We Got Here

DateWhat changed
1 December 2023Trial of 15 days visa free entry begins, with France among the first countries
30 November 2024Stay extended to 30 days
3 November 2025Policy extended to 31 December 2026
October 2026No extension for 2027 announced yet

The pattern matters. China has announced each extension shortly before the deadline, often in November. That makes an extension possible, but you cannot count on it until it is official.

If Your Trip Is in 2027

Rules apply on the day you enter China, not the day you book. If you land on 2 January 2027 and no extension has been announced, you would need a visa. Because visa centres become busy before Chinese New Year, waiting until the last moment is risky.

  1. Book flights and hotels that you can change or cancel.
  2. Follow announcements from the Chinese Embassy in France in November and December.
  3. If nothing is announced by early December, start a visa application through the official visa centre.
  4. Check that your passport is valid for at least six months after arrival and has blank pages.

The Transit Option

China also runs a separate visa free transit policy of up to 240 hours, which is ten days. It is designed for people travelling on to a third country, for example Paris to Shanghai and then Shanghai to Tokyo. You must stay within the permitted regions and leave from an approved port. This policy was expanded in August 2026 and has its own rules, so it is not a simple replacement for the 30 day entry.

Who Benefits Most

  • Tourists planning short holidays of less than a month.
  • Business travellers attending fairs in Guangzhou, Shanghai or Shenzhen.
  • Families visiting relatives living in China.
  • Students joining short exchange or summer programmes.

If you plan to work, teach or study for a long time, you need a proper visa whatever happens to the visa free policy.

Practical Tips for Your First Trip

China works differently from most European destinations, so a little preparation goes a long way. Many everyday payments are made by mobile wallet rather than cash or card, although international cards are now accepted more widely than before. Set up a payment app linked to your bank card before you leave, and keep some cash as a backup.

Many popular websites and apps used in France do not work normally in China. Download offline maps, translation tools and your booking confirmations before you fly. Hotels must register foreign guests, so always carry your passport. If you stay in a private home, ask your host about local registration, as the rules can apply to you too.

Finally, keep track of your dates. Thirty days pass quickly on a long trip, and overstaying can lead to fines and problems on future visits. If you think you may need more time, apply for a visa before you travel rather than hoping for flexibility at the border.

The Honest Summary

For now, French travellers can enjoy 30 days in China without a visa, but only until 31 December 2026 unless Beijing extends the scheme. Plan 2027 trips with flexible bookings, watch for official news in November, and be ready to apply for a visa if no extension comes.
