Your cousin's friend knows an agent who can get you a European work visa in six weeks. He wants only half the money now and the rest when the visa comes. He has a WhatsApp number, a nice logo, and photos of visas he says he got for other people. It sounds like the chance your family has been waiting for.

Stop before you pay. Visa and job fraud ruins thousands of Pakistani families every year. In 2025 the FIA offloaded nearly 40,000 passengers at Pakistani airports over issues including fake jobs, forged documents and suspicious routes. The FIA also reported arresting 3,130 agents and registering 2,421 cases for human smuggling and trafficking since December 2024.

Here are 7 signs that your agent may be fake, and how to protect yourself.

Signs 1 to 3: Promises That Are Too Good

Sign 1: A guaranteed visa. No embassy allows anyone to guarantee a visa. An agent who promises 100 percent success is either lying or planning to use fake documents in your name.

Sign 2: Very high salaries with no interview. FIA and the Bureau of Emigration warned in May 2026 about fake overseas job offers with unrealistic salaries and quick placement without qualifications or interviews. Real employers interview and verify you.

Sign 3: Inside contacts at the embassy. Claims of a cousin in the embassy or special quota are a classic scam line. Embassies do not sell visas through middlemen.

Signs 4 to 5: Money Red Flags

Sign 4: Big advance payments, urgent transfers or cash with no receipt. Official warnings say demands for advance payment or immediate money transfers should be treated as suspicious. Pay official visa fees only through official channels and keep receipts.

Sign 5: Payment to personal accounts. A genuine business gives proper receipts in its registered name. Sending money to an individual's account or mobile wallet gives you no protection.

Signs 6 to 7: Paperwork and Routes

Sign 6: Offers to arrange documents. If an agent offers to arrange bank statements, job letters, degrees or bookings for you, they are offering forgery. You will be the one refused, banned or arrested.

Sign 7: Strange routes and copycat websites. Travel through several countries, sea crossings, or a visit visa for a promised job are signs of smuggling. Fake websites often copy official logos and change one letter in the web address.

How to Check Before You Pay

  1. For overseas jobs, confirm the recruiter is a licensed Overseas Employment Promoter with the Bureau of Emigration and Overseas Employment.
  2. Check the web address carefully. Official sites end in gov.pk or the foreign government's official domain.
  3. Confirm job offers directly with the employer through its official website or email.
  4. Book visa appointments only through the official embassy or visa centre website.
  5. Never hand over your original passport without a written receipt and a clear reason.
  6. Keep copies of every payment, message and document.

What to Do If You Have Been Cheated

  • Stop paying immediately, even if the agent says one more payment will release your visa.
  • Collect all evidence: receipts, chats, bank transfers, names and phone numbers.
  • Call the FIA helpline 1991 and file a complaint.
  • For job recruitment fraud, also use the Bureau of Emigration complaint system.
  • Warn your family and community so others are not trapped.

Before You Rely on Any Figure

The figures above come from FIA data reported in Pakistani media in 2026, and the warnings reflect official FIA and Bureau of Emigration advice as of May 2026. Procedures and helplines can change, so confirm them on official government websites. If you have lost money or documents, report it to the authorities and seek advice from a licensed lawyer.
