Australia

Big Alert – Skilled Visa

What it means

Three new Ministerial Directions that reshape how Australia processes family, skilled and National Innovation visas took effect on 25 July 2026 and were still making headlines in migration circles as of 4 August. Under Direction 119, the Department of Home Affairs now processes skilled visa nominations in five priority tiers based on occupation and location rather than sponsor accreditation alone. Applicants in law enforcement and defence linked roles get the highest priority, followed by construction, healthcare and teaching, and applicants already onshore are favoured over those applying from abroad.

Regional business sponsorship, which used to guarantee faster processing on its own, has been dropped as a standalone priority. The changes apply to applications already on hand, so pending cases in the Skills in Demand subclass 482 stream and other affected programs are being re sequenced under the new order right now.

Impact

Consultants should tell clients in construction, healthcare, teaching, defence or law enforcement occupations that they are now better positioned for faster decisions, especially if they are already in Australia. Clients who were relying on regional sponsorship as their main advantage should be told this no longer guarantees priority, and any processing time estimate given before 25 July should be treated as outdated.

United States

Active Alert – Work Authorization (TPS)

What it means

USCIS has confirmed that automatically extended Employment Authorization Documents for Somalia's Temporary Protected Status holders expire today, 5 August 2026, while Burma's TPS work permits remain valid through 7 August. These short rolling extensions have continued since the Supreme Court's June 2026 ruling in Mullin v. Doe, which allowed the administration to proceed with ending TPS for Haiti and Syria and is now shaping litigation outcomes for the remaining designated countries.

Separately, the State Department has made its 750 dollar paid expedite option for B-1/B-2 visa interview appointments a standing feature at Mission Mexico, and a visa bond pilot program for applicants from certain high refusal rate countries has been made permanent at increased bond amounts from 31 July.

Impact

Consultants handling Somali TPS clients should check today whether a further extension notice has been issued before advising on employment eligibility, since a lapse could affect an employee's I-9 status immediately. Burma TPS holders still have two more days of protection. Clients asking about expedited US visitor visa interviews should be told the paid option is currently limited to Mexico and does not shorten adjudication or guarantee approval.

Canada

New IRCC Update – Permanent Residence and Study Permits

What it means

Two Federal Court rulings reported on 4 August ordered Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada to decide a caregiver permanent residence application within 60 days and a study permit application that had been stuck in security screening for more than three years within 45 days. Both used the mandamus remedy, which compels a decision but not a specific outcome, and follow a Federal Court of Appeal ruling that shifts the burden onto IRCC to justify prolonged delays once an applicant shows the wait is unreasonable.

The rulings apply only to the individual applicants involved and do not automatically speed up anyone else's file, but they add to a growing body of case law that consultants can cite for clients facing several year processing gaps.

Impact

Consultants with clients waiting years beyond IRCC's published service standards, particularly in the caregiver, start up visa or security screening flagged categories, should discuss requesting GCMS notes through an ATIP request and consulting a licensed lawyer about mandamus as a realistic option, while being clear that court action guarantees a decision, not an approval.

European Union / Schengen Area

Active Alert – Visitor and Business Travel

What it means

The European Commission confirmed on 3 August that Austria, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland and Sweden are maintaining internal Schengen border checks through September to December 2026, citing irregular migration, organised crime and terrorism risks. Italy has newly extended checks at its air and sea borders with Spain from 1 August, prompted by a rise in irregular arrivals into Ceuta that authorities fear could move onward into the wider Schengen area.

These are not new visa requirements, but travellers, including those moving between Schengen countries for business or study, may face identity checks and delays even inside the zone.

Impact

Consultants should remind clients travelling through or between these eight countries to carry a passport or national ID at every crossing, build in extra time for road and rail travel, and remember that visa exempt stays are still capped at 90 days in any 180 day period regardless of these border checks.

United Kingdom

Updated – Sponsor, Student and Family Routes

What it means

The Home Office's Statement of Changes to the Immigration Rules, known as HC 259, took effect in two stages on 30 July and 3 August 2026. Most of its more than 30 appendices are technical corrections, but several substantive changes affect sponsor duties, salary calculations and documentation requirements across the skilled worker, student and family routes.

The changes were laid before Parliament on 9 July with limited public attention, so some sponsors and applicants may not yet know their route is affected.

Impact

Consultants should review HC 259 against each active UK case rather than assume only headline reforms matter, since overlooked technical amendments have historically caused refusals. Sponsor licence holders in particular should check whether salary or reporting duties have shifted under this update.

Colombia

Active Alert – Work Visa

What it means

Colombian immigration authorities are taking longer than the statutory 30 day window to decide work visa applications, with officers requesting extra documentation and, in some cases, changing the visa category requested without clear explanation, according to reporting confirmed on 3 August. No formal rule change has been announced, but the shift coincides with the country's presidential transition on 7 August.

Nationals from countries that require a visa to enter Colombia appear most affected, and even small inconsistencies across submitted documents are increasingly triggering delays.

Impact

Consultants should advise clients applying for Colombian work visas to submit fully consistent, well organised documentation now, build in buffer time before the 7 August transition, and avoid assuming current processing timelines will hold once the new administration takes office.

Mozambique

Update – Tourist and Business Travel

What it means

Mozambique's National Immigration Service confirmed that its Electronic Travel Authorization system became fully mandatory again from 31 July 2026, ending a suspension that had been in place since May 2025 due to technical problems with the earlier online platform. The requirement applies to visitors from 29 visa exempt countries, including the UK and most EU states, who must now apply at least 48 hours before departure through the rebuilt VFS Global supported portal.

Impact

Consultants should tell clients travelling to Mozambique for tourism or business from an affected country that they can no longer arrive without pre clearance, and that airlines may deny boarding if an approved ETA is not on file.
