United States — Big Alert (Visitor Visa)
Visa Bond Program Made Permanent, Bonds Up To $20,000

What it means:
The US State Department has made its B1/B2 visa bond pilot permanent, effective today. Consular officers can now ask visitor visa applicants from about 50 countries, mostly in Africa, plus a few others, to post a refundable bond of $10,000, $15,000, or $20,000 before their visa is issued. This is a jump from the $15,000 ceiling during the one year pilot.

The government says the bond sharply cut overstays during the trial period, but visa approval numbers for the affected countries also dropped by more than 80 percent over the same time.

Impact:
Consultants handling US visitor visa files for clients from the listed countries should explain the bond requirement clearly and set correct expectations on cost and refund conditions. Since the country list can change with only 15 days notice, always confirm the current list on the State Department website before filing.

United Kingdom — Big Alert (Work, Student and Visitor Visas)
New Immigration Rules Take Effect Today Across Several Routes

What it means:
A large set of Home Office rule changes under Statement of Changes HC 259 came into force today. From today, babies born in the UK to a Graduate visa holder can apply as a dependant without needing to have arrived as one. Anyone convicted abroad and given a suspended sentence of 12 months or more will now be refused an Electronic Travel Authorisation or have an existing one cancelled. Certain overstayers on immigration bail can, in narrow circumstances, now apply under the Student, Skilled Worker, Graduate and Visitor routes.

Whether an application is judged under the old or new rules depends entirely on when the visa fee was paid, before today or from today onward.

Impact:
Consultants should record the exact date and time each client's fee was paid, since that single detail decides which rulebook applies. Clients with a past conviction or suspended sentence should get a case review before applying for a UK ETA or visa under the new refusal grounds.

Canada — Update (Work Permit)
Reciprocal Employment Work Permit Category Tightened

What it means:
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada has tightened the C20 Reciprocal Employment work permit, a popular LMIA free route used by multinational companies to move staff into Canada. Under the new guidance, an applicant must already be working for the overseas company before applying. Anyone whose job with that company was only meant to begin after landing in Canada no longer qualifies. The change applies immediately, even to applications filed earlier.

Impact:
This mainly affects Indian and other overseas professionals whose employers plan to transfer them to a Canadian office. Consultants should confirm that every C20 client already has an active job with the sending company, and should advise multinational employers that new hire transfers can no longer use this route without proof of prior employment abroad.

Japan — Active Alert (Permanent Residence)
Public Comment Closes Today On Tougher PR Requirements

What it means:
Japan's Immigration Services Agency has proposed a major rewrite of permanent residency criteria, and the public comment window on the draft closes today. The plan would require applicants to earn more than the average Japanese household income and hold pension savings equal to 30 years in the national pension system, though savings can make up any shortfall. Language and integration checks would tighten further, and some spouse based applicants would face a higher bar. The government aims to bring the rules into force around October 2026 for new applications only.

Impact:
This is still a proposal, not law, so consultants should reassure clients while encouraging anyone who already meets today's easier criteria to file soon. Firms with Japan bound clients should watch for the finalised guidelines expected later this year before making long term plans.

South Africa — Update (Visitor Visa / ETA)
Fee Proposed For Electronic Travel Authorisation

What it means:
South Africa's Department of Home Affairs has proposed a 500 rand processing fee for its Electronic Travel Authorisation, which currently covers travellers from China, India, Indonesia and Mexico. The ETA has been free since launch last year because online payment was not ready. Public comments are open until 11 August, and if approved, the fee would begin from 17 August 2026.

Impact:
Indian applicants with South Africa trips planned in the coming weeks should apply for their ETA now while it remains free. Consultants should flag this as a near certain change and build the fee into future cost estimates for South Africa bound clients.

Currently Active Elsewhere
A few other developments remain relevant this week without being new today. In the United States, TPS linked work permits for Burma and Somalia reach their latest extension date today, while Ethiopia and South Sudan permits run through 6 August, all tied to ongoing court cases. Ireland continues to let expired Irish Residence Permit holders travel and work if their renewal was filed on time, a measure running through 31 August. New Zealand's Skilled Migrant Category is set for its next major overhaul, including two new residence pathways, from 24 August 2026.
