First, the Mistake That Could Cost You Your Flight

Before the list, one clarification that matters enormously.

A large number of circulating guides confuse two opposite things: countries whose citizens can enter China visa-free under China's unilateral policy, and countries that grant visa-free entry to Chinese passport holders.

One major visa platform published a formal correction on exactly this point, confirming that Australia, New Zealand, Japan and South Korea appear on China's inbound list, meaning their citizens can visit China without a visa, but Chinese ordinary passport holders still require visas to visit those countries.

The structural reality remains: Schengen, the UK, the US, Canada, Australia and Japan all still require visas for Chinese passport holders. Everything below refers strictly to where Chinese passports travel without advance application.

Region-Specific Access Only

These grant access to part of a country, not all of it. Entering the mainland still requires a visa.

Visa on Arrival

Asia: Bahrain, Timor-Leste, Cambodia, Laos, Lebanon, Bangladesh, Nepal, Saudi Arabia, Turkmenistan, Indonesia, Jordan, Vietnam, Myanmar.

Africa: Egypt, Botswana, Burundi, Cape Verde, Zimbabwe, Comoros, Rwanda, Madagascar, SΓ£o TomΓ© and PrΓncipe, Tanzania, Gabon, Djibouti, Mauritania, Sierra Leone, Somalia.

Cape Verde suspended visa on arrival for 96 countries from 1 January 2026, though Chinese citizens remain unaffected.

The Third-Country Visa Unlock

Holding a major visa opens additional destinations.

DestinationQualifying VisaStay
MexicoValid US B1/B2 visa180 days
ArgentinaValid US or Schengen visaTourist/business
ArgentinaUS permanent residence (green card)Tourist/business
Cayman IslandsValid US, UK or Canadian visaPer policy
South Korea transitValid US, UK, Schengen, Canadian, Australian, NZ or Irish visaTransit to third country only

South Korea's transit rule is strict: China to Korea to the US works, China to Korea and back does not.

Four Traps to Avoid

  1. Electronic entry cards are mandatory. Before travelling to Singapore, Malaysia or Thailand, complete the online declaration (SGAC or MDAC) at least 3 days in advance, or you will be refused entry.
  2. Passport validity is non-negotiable. At least 6 months remaining on departure day, plus 2 blank visa pages.
  3. Visa-free does not mean document-free. Customs may check return tickets and hotel bookings even in visa-free countries. Print paper copies.
  4. Check expiry dates. Brazil runs to end of 2026, Cambodia's trial ends 15 October 2026. Several newest additions are temporary.

Before You Travel

  • Confirmed the destination grants visa-free entry to Chinese passports, not the reverse
  • Checked whether the policy is permanent or has an expiry date
  • Verified whether access covers the whole country or one region only
  • Confirmed 6 months passport validity and 2 blank pages
  • Completed SGAC or MDAC if travelling to Singapore, Malaysia or Thailand
  • Checked whether an existing US or Schengen visa unlocks extra destinations
  • Reconfirmed on the embassy website shortly before departure

The Bigger Picture

Chinese passport mobility improved substantially through 2024 to 2026, with Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Central Asia and the Caribbean now largely covered. Turkey, the Philippines, Brazil and Russia all opened within months of each other.

The structural gap remains high-income destinations: Schengen, the UK, the US, Canada, Australia and Japan all still require visas. And because policies now change monthly rather than yearly, verifying before booking beats trusting a list saved months ago.
