How We Got Here

WhenWhat happened
1 October 2025Interview waivers narrowed; most applicants must attend in person
1 January 2026New US travel restrictions on 39 countries take effect; Pakistan is not included
21 January 2026Pause on immigrant visas for 75 countries, including Pakistan, begins

What does this mean for an ordinary Pakistani family? If you want to visit relatives, attend a conference, or study in the US, the process works again, but you should expect longer waits than usual after months of cancellations. If you are waiting for an immigrant visa through a family or employer petition, your case may move again, but more slowly than you hope.

Visitor, Student and Business Visas

Nonimmigrant visas, such as visitor (B1/B2), student (F1) and exchange (J1) visas, were not part of the immigrant visa pause. Their main disruption came from the March security situation. With Karachi and Lahore back to regular processing from July 2026, appointments are available again, though wait times can be long after months of cancellations.

The Immigrant Visa Pause, Explained

On 21 January 2026, the State Department paused immigrant visa processing for nationals of 75 countries, including Pakistan, citing concerns that applicants could become a public charge. On 21 August 2026, a federal court in New York vacated the pause, and on 10 September 2026 the State Department told consulates that it was no longer in effect. Cases refused only because of the pause are meant to be reconsidered.

The end of the pause does not mean automatic visas. Officers still apply the public charge test to every immigrant visa, and some applicants may be asked for new medical exams, documents or interviews. Reports in September 2026 also suggested immigrant interviews were not yet fully back to normal everywhere.

Here is where Pakistanis apply in October 2026.

What It Costs Now

FeeAmountWhen paid
Visitor, student or exchange visa application fee185 dollarsBefore the interview; not refundable
Visa Integrity Fee250 dollars in lawAt issuance where collected; check embassy instructions
SEVIS fee for studentsSet by the US governmentBefore the interview

The 250 dollar Visa Integrity Fee was created by a 2025 US law, but its collection has been uneven between embassies. Check the US Embassy in Pakistan's instructions before your interview.

For visitor visas, the officer's main question is whether you will return to Pakistan after your trip. Students must also show admission, funds and a genuine study plan. Business visitors should show who they will meet and why. Clear, honest documents are still the best answer to every question.

Rules Every Applicant Should Know

  • Apply in your country of nationality or residence. Booking in another country is generally not allowed.
  • Expect an in person interview, including children under 14 and adults over 79, with limited renewal exceptions.
  • Student and exchange applicants should keep social media profiles public, as officers review online presence.
  • Answer every DS-160 question honestly and consistently with your documents.
  • Show strong ties to Pakistan: work, studies, family and property.

Interview Tips That Help

What to Do Now

  1. If your appointment was cancelled in March 2026, check your email and the official appointment system for rescheduling.
  2. If you are applying fresh, complete the DS-160 carefully and pay the 185 dollar fee.
  3. Prepare a clear, honest file: income proof, employment or business records, travel history.
  4. For immigrant visas, check the National Visa Center and embassy messages regularly for updates on your case.
  5. If your immigrant visa was refused only because of the pause, watch for reconsideration instructions.
  6. Avoid agents who promise faster appointments for extra money. Use only the official system.
