The US Visa Bond and the Lagos Move: A Plain Guide for Nigerian Travellers

Blog Image

Two changes in 2026 have made the US visa journey feel very different for Nigerians. First, a visa bond: a large refundable deposit that some visitor visa applicants must pay before a visa is issued. Second, the move of routine visa services from Abuja to Lagos.

Both changes add cost and planning. But neither is as mysterious as social media makes it sound. This guide explains, in simple terms, how the bond works, when you get your money back, and what the Lagos move means for applicants living outside Lagos.

What a Visa Bond Is

A visa bond is a deposit, not a fee. The US holds the money while you are allowed to stay. If you follow the rules and leave on time, the bond is returned. If you overstay or break your visa conditions, the full amount can be forfeited.

Nigeria joined the pilot programme on 21 January 2026, when amounts were up to 15,000 US dollars. On 3 August 2026, the State Department made the programme permanent and raised the amounts. Remember that new visitor visas for Nigerians are also largely paused under a separate proclamation, so the bond mainly affects applicants who fall under an exception or are otherwise found eligible.

The Numbers

How You Get Your Money Back

  • You leave the US on or before the date you were allowed to stay.
  • You never travel on the visa before it expires.
  • You are refused entry at the US border.
  • You properly file an extension or change of status on time.

The bond is usually cancelled automatically after a timely departure. No interest is paid. Keep your boarding passes and travel records in case you need to prove when you left.

Never Pay a Bond to an Agent

The officer will give you official payment instructions. Payments made through third party websites are not accepted and will not be refunded. If anyone asks you to send bond money to a personal account, a travel agency or a so called processing company, it is a scam.

The Move From Abuja to Lagos

From 1 August 2026, routine visa services, including booking appointments and visa interviews, moved to the US Consulate General in Lagos. The US Embassy in Abuja still handles American citizen services, emergencies and certain diplomatic work. Lagos is one of about 20 hubs across Africa that now handle routine visa applications.

If you live in Abuja, Kano, Enugu or Port Harcourt, plan for travel and accommodation costs in Lagos. Book your trip only after your appointment is confirmed, and leave a day of buffer for traffic or flight delays.

Planning Checklist

  1. Confirm your visa type is open to Nigerians right now.
  2. Book your appointment through the official US visa appointment system.
  3. Budget for the visa fee, travel to Lagos and a possible bond.
  4. Prepare honest, complete documents and strong reasons to return home.
  5. If a bond is requested, pay only through the official link the officer gives you.

Why the US Uses Bonds

The US says the bond programme is meant to reduce overstays by giving travellers a strong financial reason to leave on time. US officials cited overstay rates for Nigerian visitors and students when Nigeria was added to the programme. Whatever your view of the policy, the practical lesson is simple: if you receive a visa with a bond, follow every condition and keep proof of your departure.

Think about the cost of the bond before your interview. Raising 15,000 or 20,000 US dollars quickly is not easy for most families, and borrowing at high interest to pay a bond can create serious financial stress. Make sure the trip is truly worth it.
