US Visa Bond for Bangladeshis Is Now Permanent: What It Costs and How to Get It Back

Planning to visit family in New York, attend a business meeting in Texas or take a holiday in the United States? If you hold a Bangladeshi passport, there is one extra cost you need to understand before your interview: the US visa bond.

Bangladesh joined the US visa bond list on 21 January 2026. At first it was a trial. From 3 August 2026, the State Department made it a permanent rule for 50 countries, including Bangladesh, and raised the amounts. A consular officer can now ask for 10,000, 15,000 or 20,000 US dollars before your tourist or business visa is issued.

This is a refundable deposit, not a fee. But it is a large sum, and the rules about paying and getting it back are strict. Here is what you need to know in plain words.

What the Visa Bond Is

A visa bond is money you deposit with the US government as a promise that you will follow your visa rules. If you leave the US on time, the money comes back. If you overstay or break the conditions, the US keeps it.

It applies to B1 business and B2 tourist visas. Student visas and work visas are not part of this rule.

How the Process Works

The officer first decides if you qualify for a visa in the normal way. Only then will they tell you whether a bond is needed and how much. You will receive official payment instructions. Anyone, such as a relative, can pay the bond on your behalf.

  1. Pay the normal visa application fee of 185 US dollars and book your interview.
  2. Attend the interview at the US Embassy in Dhaka.
  3. If a bond is required, wait for the official payment instructions.
  4. Pay only through the government payment platform named in those instructions.
  5. Receive your visa, then travel and leave the US on or before your departure date.

You may also need to pay the 250 US dollar Visa Integrity Fee when the visa is issued, where it is being collected. Check your appointment instructions.

Never Pay Before Your Interview

The US Embassy in Dhaka has warned people not to pay a bond before the interview. Paying early does not help your case. Payments made through agents or unofficial websites may be scams, and money paid the wrong way may not be returned.

How You Get Your Money Back

The bond is refunded when you follow the conditions of your visa and leave the US within your permitted stay. It is also cancelled if you file a proper extension or change of status on time. Under the permanent rule, you must enter and leave through a commercial airport or a US preclearance location.

  • Overstaying, even for a short time, can mean you lose the full amount.
  • Filing an extension late can lead to loss of the bond.
  • Not leaving within 10 days after a request is denied can lead to loss.
  • Applying for asylum leads to loss of the bond.

Is the Trip Still Worth It?

For many families, yes. If you have a genuine reason to travel, strong ties to Bangladesh and the money for the trip, a bond is a temporary cost. Plan your budget so the deposit does not put pressure on your family, and keep every receipt and travel record until the refund arrives.

Questions to Ask Yourself Before the Interview

The bond is decided after the officer is satisfied that you qualify. So your first job is still to show a genuine reason for travel, steady ties to Bangladesh such as work, business, property or family, and enough money for the trip. If you are visiting relatives, carry their invitation and details of their status in the US. If you are travelling for business, carry a letter from your company and the US host.

Think also about where the bond money would come from. If a relative pays it, keep proof of the payment and their relationship to you. Do not borrow from informal lenders at high interest just to cover a deposit. If the amount would put your family under strain, it may be wiser to delay the trip.
