Key takeaways
  • US citizens have needed a UK ETA to visit since 8 January 2025.
  • The official fee rose to 20 pounds on 8 April 2026.
  • An ETA lasts two years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.
  • Every traveller, including babies, needs their own ETA.

You have a weekend in London planned, a theatre ticket booked, and a passport that has never needed a visa for Britain. Then the airline check in screen asks for something you have never heard of. Many Americans still do not realise that visiting the United Kingdom now requires a digital permit before travel.

The permit is the Electronic Travel Authorisation, or ETA. US citizens have needed one since 8 January 2025, and since 25 February 2026 the UK has been enforcing the rule strictly, which means airlines are expected to refuse boarding to visitors without one. The official fee is now 20 pounds.

Here is how the ETA works, what it costs, and the mistakes that most often leave travellers stuck at the airport.

Short on time? Here is the quick answer.

Your questionThe short answer
Do Americans need a UK ETA?Yes, since 8 January 2025.
How much is it?20 pounds per person since 8 April 2026.
How long does it last? Two years, or until your passport expires.
How fast is the decision?Usually within a day. Allow up to three working days.
Where do I apply?Only the official UK ETA app or the GOV.UK website.
Is it a visa? No. It is a digital permission linked to your passport.

What the ETA Is

An ETA is not a visa. It is a digital permission linked to your passport that lets you travel to the UK, Jersey, Guernsey, or the Isle of Man for tourism, visiting family, business meetings, and certain other activities for up to six months at a time. It does not let you work in the UK. It also does not guarantee entry; a Border Force officer still decides whether to admit you when you arrive.

Once approved, an ETA lasts for two years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first, and you can use it for as many trips as you like during that time.

How We Got Here

DateWhat changed
8 January 2025ETA became a requirement for US citizens and other eligible non European nationals
2 April 2025Requirement extended to eligible European nationals
April 2025Fee increased from 10 pounds to 16 pounds
25 February 2026Strict enforcement began; travellers without an ETA or other permission should expect to be refused boarding
8 April 2026Fee increased from 16 pounds to 20 pounds

For American travellers, the practical effect of the February 2026 change is that there is no longer any leniency at check in. Airlines check your ETA electronically against your passport, in much the same way that carriers check ESTA approval for visitors flying into the United States.

The ETA has proved popular. Official figures released in August 2026 showed more than 23 million ETAs issued in the twelve months to June 2026, with US citizens the largest single group of users.

If you are travelling as a family, the cost adds up per person. Here is a simple guide using the official fee.

Who Needs One and Who Does Not

If you hold a US passport and you are visiting for a short stay, you almost certainly need an ETA. Each person needs their own, including babies and children, although one person can apply on behalf of others.

  • You do not need an ETA if you hold a British or Irish passport. Dual British and American citizens should travel on their British passport.
  • You do not need an ETA if you already have permission to live, work, or study in the UK, such as a visa or settled status.
  • You do need an ETA if you transit a UK airport and pass through border control before your onward flight.
  • If you stay airside during a connection, check the current transit guidance with your airline before you fly.

How to Apply

  1. Use only the official UK ETA app or the GOV.UK website. Other sites may charge far more for the same thing.
  2. Have your passport, an email address, and a payment card, Apple Pay, or Google Pay ready.
  3. Scan or photograph your passport and take a photo of your face that meets the official photo rules.
  4. Answer the questions honestly, including those about criminal records and previous immigration problems.
  5. Pay the 20 pound fee. It is not refundable, even if your application is refused.
  6. Wait for the email confirming your decision before you travel. Most decisions arrive within a day, but you should allow up to three working days.

It also helps to know what an ETA lets you do, and what it does not.

The Mistakes That Leave People Stranded

The most common problem is applying through a copycat website. These sites look official, charge inflated fees, and sometimes fail to submit a valid application at all. The second is applying with one passport and travelling with another. Your ETA is linked to the passport you applied with, so if you renew your passport you need a new ETA. The third is leaving it too late. While many decisions are quick, an application can be held for further checks, and you cannot board without the confirmation.

Travel agents booking UK trips for American clients should build the ETA into their checklist, just as they would a passport validity check.

When an ETA Is Not Enough

If you have a criminal conviction, a previous UK refusal, or plans that go beyond what visitors are allowed to do, your ETA may be refused or may not be the right permission. In those cases you may need to apply for a Standard Visitor visa or another visa instead. Do not assume the ETA will be approved simply because you have visited before.

Equally, if you plan to stay longer than six months or take up paid work, an ETA is the wrong permission and you would need the relevant visa before travelling. Border officers can ask about the purpose of your trip, where you are staying, and how you will pay for it, so carry evidence such as your return ticket and accommodation details.

Before You Rely on Any Figure

The fee and rules above are correct as of October 2026 according to official UK government guidance. UK immigration fees are reviewed regularly and can change with little notice, so check the GOV.UK ETA pages on the day you apply. If you have a criminal record, a past refusal, or an unusual situation, speak to a qualified immigration adviser authorised to give UK immigration advice, or a licensed lawyer. The Honest Summary

For most Americans, the UK ETA is a quick online step that costs 20 pounds and covers two years of trips. The risks come from using the wrong website, travelling on a different passport, or applying at the last minute. Apply on the official app or GOV.UK, wait for your confirmation email, and treat the ETA as part of your passport check before every UK trip.
