Renewing Your Canadian Passport Online in 2026: Who Qualifies and How It Works

Planning a winter trip or a holiday for next year? The first thing to check is your passport. If it expires soon, you may now be able to renew it from home, without visiting a passport office.

On 28 July 2026, the federal government opened online renewal to all eligible adults living in Canada. Before that, only some applicants could use it and there was a daily limit. Here is how it works and how to avoid delays.

Can You Renew Online?

You can renew online if you meet the normal renewal rules and these extra conditions:

• You are renewing your own adult passport.
• Your home and mailing addresses are in Canada, and you will be there to receive it.
• Your passport expires within six months or has already expired.
• You do not need a passport for the next 20 business days, plus mailing time.
• Your name, date of birth, place of birth and gender identifier have not changed.
• Your current passport is not damaged, lost, stolen or seized, and has no observations.

If any of these do not apply, you can still renew in person or by mail.

Online renewal is designed for simple cases. If your name has changed after marriage, if you want to change your gender identifier, or if your passport is badly damaged, the in person or mail routes are the right choice. These routes ask for more documents, so give yourself extra time.

Fees and Timing

The fee is the same whether you apply online, in person or by mail. You pay digitally during the online application.

The Photo Rules Matter Most

Most online applications that run into trouble have a photo problem. Your digital photo must be taken in person by a commercial photographer, be no more than six months old and must not be edited in any way. You will need the studio name, address and the date the photo was taken.

The image must show your face and shoulders straight on, with a neutral expression, eyes open and an even, plain background. Ask your photographer for the digital file for an online passport application, since the size and format rules are strict.

Your References

You need two references aged 18 or over who have known you for at least two years and agree to be listed. They cannot be family members, a spouse or partner, or a child or grandchild. Tell them in advance, as they may be contacted.

Good references are people such as a former colleague, a neighbour, a teacher or a friend you have known for years. Make sure you have their full names, phone numbers and addresses before you start, so the application does not time out while you search for details.

How to Apply Step by Step

1. Check your expiry date and confirm you meet every online condition.
2. Get your digital passport photo from a commercial photographer.
3. Contact your two references and note their details.
4. Complete the online renewal on the official Government of Canada website.
5. Pay the fee online and keep your confirmation.
6. Wait for your new passport by mail and do not travel on the old one.

Important Warning About Travel Plans

Your current passport is cancelled once you apply. That means you cannot use it to travel while your renewal is processed. If you have a trip within the next month or so, do not apply online. Use the in person options, which may offer faster service for urgent travel.

Also check the passport validity rules of the country you are visiting. Many countries want your passport to be valid for several months beyond your trip. Renewing early avoids last minute stress.

A good habit is to check every passport in your household each January. Note the expiry dates in your calendar, and plan renewals for quieter months. Spring and early summer are often the busiest periods for passport services, as families prepare for holidays.

Use Only the Official Website

Some private websites offer to help with passport renewal for an extra fee. You do not need them. The official online service is on the Government of Canada website, and the government fee is the same for everyone.

Before You Rely on Any Figure

Fees and rules above reflect official Government of Canada information as of October 2026. Rules, fees and dates change, so check the official government website on the day you act. For questions about your own case, speak to a licensed immigration lawyer or an authorised representative. World Visa Academy is a training academy; it does not file applications or guarantee any visa or outcome.

The Honest Summary

Online renewal is now open to most adults living in Canada. Check that you qualify, get the photo right, line up your references and apply well before you travel. Your old passport stops working the day you apply.
