UNITED STATES / DRC / UGANDA / SOUTH SUDAN Emergency Entry Ban Still Active – Ebola Outbreak Response

What it means: The US CDC issued a 30-day entry ban on foreign nationals who have been in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, or South Sudan within the past 21 days. The order took effect on May 18, 2026, and applies to all foreign nationals regardless of their nationality or country of origin. US citizens and green card holders are exempt. US Embassies in Juba, Kinshasa, and Kampala have also temporarily paused all visa services.

Impact: Anyone who has passed through any of these three countries recently cannot board a flight to the US right now. This also means visa stamping is frozen at US embassies there. Clients traveling through East or Central Africa need to reroute carefully. The WHO has reported 500 suspected cases and 130 suspected deaths from the outbreak, with numbers expected to rise. This ban is likely to be extended beyond 30 days if the outbreak is not contained.

UNITED KINGDOM Q1 2026 Migration Transparency Data Released Today

What it means: The UK Home Office officially released its Q1 2026 Migration Transparency Data today, 21 May 2026 at 9:30am. This is the quarterly data covering Border Force performance, visa processing times, enforcement actions, and citizenship applications. The Register of Licensed Sponsors for both workers and students was also updated today, 21 May 2026, along with the Migrant Journey collection.

Impact: Consultants and HR teams can now use fresh official data to benchmark UK visa processing speeds and identify where delays are building up. The sponsor register update means some employers may have been added or removed. Always verify your client's sponsor licence status before filing.

UNITED KINGDOM UKVI Now Monitoring Employers in Real Time

What it means: Since 8 April 2026, UKVI has moved from periodic audits to continuous automated data-matching. It now cross-references live HMRC PAYE data against sponsor records in real time. Companies House filings are also being checked against registered sponsor details. The March 2026 introduction of "reasonable suspicion" as an enforcement threshold means UKVI can trigger compliance action based purely on data anomalies, without visiting the employer's office.

Impact: This is a major shift. Employers sponsoring foreign workers can now face compliance action at any time, not just during scheduled visits. Any mismatch in salary, role, or employee records can trigger an investigation. Consultants advising UK sponsor employers must flag this urgently.

WORLDWIDE Eid al-Adha Government Closures Approaching Fast

What it means: Government offices across multiple countries will close for Eid al-Adha, in most countries from May 27 or 28 until May 30 or 31, 2026. The UAE is closed May 25 to 31, Turkey from May 25 to 29, Indonesia on May 27 and 28, India on May 27, Singapore on May 27, Egypt from May 26 to 30, Bahrain from May 26 to 31, and Bangladesh from May 25 to 31.

Impact: You have less than one week. Any application going into immigration offices in these countries must be submitted today or tomorrow to avoid delays that could stretch well into June due to post-holiday backlogs. Affected countries include major sending and receiving markets. Urgency is real.

CANADA Processing Times Worsening Across Key Streams

What it means: IRCC released updated processing times on May 12, 2026, showing significant delays across major immigration pathways. Express Entry and Provincial Nominee Program applications each saw one-month jumps in wait times. The Canadian Experience Class queue grew by more than 6,000 applicants in a single month, while the base PNP backlog increased by over 2,000 applications.

Impact: Clients applying through Express Entry or PNP must be prepared for longer waits. Document validity, language test scores, and proof of funds all need to remain current for longer periods. Plan ahead and do not let any key documents expire during the wait.

AUSTRALIA 2026-27 Migration Budget Locks In New Strategy

What it means: Australia has confirmed its 185,000-place migration cap for 2026-27 but has significantly reshuffled the allocation. Employer-sponsored and Skilled Independent visas receive the biggest gains, while regional quotas have been steeply cut. Around 70 percent of places are reserved for people already in Australia.

Impact: If your client is already onshore in Australia, they are in a much stronger position right now. Offshore skilled applicants face tougher competition. Employers should move quickly to convert temporary workers to permanent residence before the competition gets even heavier.

SCHENGEN AREA / EUROPE Entry and Exit System Fully Running

What it means: From 10 April 2026, the EU's new Entry and Exit System became fully operational. This digital border system changes entry requirements for citizens travelling to the Schengen area, which covers 27 countries including France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Netherlands, and others.

Impact: Non-EU nationals now have their entries and exits digitally recorded at Schengen borders. Overstays are automatically flagged. Travelers and applicants with past overstay history face higher risk of entry refusal. Prepare clients accordingly before any Schengen travel.

PORTUGAL Citizenship Now Takes 10 Years Instead of 5

What it means: Portugal has extended its citizenship timeline from 5 to 10 years. This affects foreign residents, Golden Visa holders, and others on residency pathways who were planning to apply for Portuguese and EU citizenship.

Impact: Anyone who had a 5-year timeline in mind must now completely revise their planning. Golden Visa clients in particular need to understand this change affects their EU citizenship route significantly. New applications and investment decisions should factor in the longer wait.

PARAGUAY Brand New Investor Pass Launched

What it means: Paraguay has introduced a new Investor Pass granting permanent residence to foreign nationals making qualifying investments in the country. Qualifying investments now include commercial and industrial projects, the Paraguayan stock market, real estate, and tourism-related activities. Permanent residence permits are valid for 10 years and renewable, and allow holders to work and run a business in Paraguay.

Impact: This is a new and affordable permanent residency route in South America. For clients looking at investor residency options outside Europe, Paraguay has just made itself significantly more attractive with real estate and stock market investment now qualifying.

No major new policy changes or big announcements reported from other countries worldwide today.

Pro Tip for Immigration Consultants

With Eid al-Adha closures starting in under a week across the UAE, Turkey, Indonesia, India, Egypt, Bahrain, Bangladesh, and Singapore, this is the single most time-sensitive action point today. Call every client with a pending application in any of these countries right now. A one-day delay in submission today could mean a three to four week delay in processing after the holidays. Submit everything you can before Friday ends.
