ETIAS Launch Date 2026: Is Europe’s New Travel Permit Delayed to 2027?

Blog Image

Planning a trip to Europe and worried about a new permit you keep hearing about? You are not alone. Many visa free travellers from countries such as the US, UK, Canada and Australia are asking the same question: when does ETIAS start?

Here is the simple answer. ETIAS is not running. As of October 2026, there is no official launch date. The European Union removed its last quarter of 2026 target from the official ETIAS website in July 2026, and a start in 2027 is now widely expected. The EU has promised to announce the date several months before launch.

Short on time? Here is the quick answer.

Your questionThe short answer
Do I need ETIAS today? No. It is not running.
Is there a launch date? No. The 2026 target was removed in July 2026.
When will it start? Not confirmed; 2027 looks likely.
How much will it cost?20 euros; free under 18 and from 70.
How long will it last?Three years or until your passport expires.

How We Got Here

WhenWhat happened
2021First planned launch, later delayed
March 2025EU set the last quarter of 2026 as the target
10 April 2026Entry/Exit System became fully operational
June 2026eu-LISA board discussed delaying ETIAS, according to reports
July 20262026 target removed from the official website
October 2026Still no official date

ETIAS depends on the Entry/Exit System, the border system that now records fingerprints and face scans. Long queues and technical problems with that system in 2026 are the main reason ETIAS has slipped again.

What ETIAS Will Be

ETIAS is not a visa. It is a short online check you will complete before travelling to Europe, similar to the US ESTA. It will be linked to your passport, and airlines will check it before you board.

A Soft Start Is Planned

When ETIAS starts, the law allows a transition period of about six months when applying is optional, followed by a grace period for first time travellers. So even after the launch date is announced, strict refusals for not having ETIAS will come later.

What You Should Do Now

  1. Travel as normal; ETIAS is not needed today.
  2. Do not pay any website that claims to sell ETIAS now.
  3. Keep your passport valid well beyond your trip.
  4. Follow the official EU travel website for the launch announcement.

ETIAS and EES Are Not the Same

Many travellers mix up two different systems. The Entry/Exit System, or EES, is the border record that scans your fingerprints and face when you arrive. It is already running. ETIAS is a separate online permit that you will apply for before you travel. It is not running yet.

The order matters. Europe needed EES to work well first, because ETIAS will connect to it. That is why problems at the border in 2026 pushed ETIAS back again. Once EES runs smoothly, the EU can set a firm ETIAS date.
