UNITED STATES

US Blocks Entry from Three African Countries Over Ebola Outbreak

What it means: Since 18 May 2026, the US has officially banned non-citizens from entering if they have been in Uganda, Democratic Republic of Congo, or South Sudan in the last 21 days. Visa services in these countries are also suspended. This was triggered by an active Ebola outbreak in East and Central Africa, with the first infected American already identified.

Impact: Anyone with travel history to these three countries will be denied US entry, regardless of their visa status. Indian and other applicants who transited through these countries must take this seriously. Check your recent travel history before any US-bound trip.

UNITED STATES

Banks Now Required to Check Immigration Status of Customers

What it means: President Trump signed an executive order on 19 May 2026 directing banks to screen customers for immigration status. Regulators will look for signs of undocumented individuals opening accounts or applying for loans.

Impact: Undocumented people or those on shaky visa status may face new barriers to banking services. This is a significant step in the broader enforcement push and could indirectly affect how immigrants manage finances while awaiting visa outcomes.

UNITED STATES

June Visa Bulletin Alert: Retrogression Warning Issued

What it means: The June 2026 Visa Bulletin is already out and experts are flagging a real risk of retrogression later this year. The strong movement seen earlier in 2026 has slowed down, and for May, USCIS is only accepting Final Action Dates, not Dates for Filing.

Impact: Indian applicants in the employment-based category should not wait. If your priority date is current right now, act fast. Retrogression means dates can move backward and you could lose your window.

CANADA

Express Entry Reform Consultation Just Closed: Big Changes Coming

What it means: Canada's IRCC closed its public consultation on Express Entry reform on 24 May 2026. The proposed changes are massive as IRCC is considering replacing the current three programs (CEC, FSWP, and FSTP) with a single unified pathway. High-wage occupation and job offer weight will go up. CRS scoring may be restructured.

Impact: This is one of the biggest proposed changes to Canada's flagship immigration program in years. While nothing is confirmed yet, consultants must start preparing clients for a fundamentally different Express Entry system. Candidates with low-wage occupations may find it harder to compete.

CANADA

Express Entry Draws on Pause: Next Draw Expected This Week

What it means: After an active start to 2026 with over 71,000 invitations issued in the first four months, IRCC paused its regular biweekly draw rhythm. Based on historical patterns, a new draw window was expected in the week of 25 May 2026, likely covering PNP, CEC, and a category-based round.

Impact: Candidates should keep their profiles updated at all times. IRCC can hold a draw with very little notice and back-to-back rounds have happened multiple times this year already.

EUROPE (SCHENGEN AREA)

EES Fully Live: 66 Million Entries Recorded, 32,000 People Refused Entry

What it means: The European Commission published its State of Schengen Report on 18 May 2026, confirming that the Entry/Exit System has been fully operational across all Schengen borders since 10 April 2026. The system has already recorded over 66 million entries and exits and refused 32,000 people who had no right to enter. ETIAS (the pre-authorization system) is still on track for Q4 2026.

Impact: If you are travelling to Schengen countries and are not an EU citizen, you must give your fingerprints and facial image at the border. Long queues have been reported at major airports in Spain, France, and Greece. Advise clients to arrive early for flights and factor in extra border time.

UNITED KINGDOM

Student Visa Refused for Four Countries: Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar, Sudan

What it means: Applications for UK student visas submitted by nationals of Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar, and Sudan on or after 26 March 2026 are now being refused outright due to what the government calls unsustainable levels of visa-linked asylum claims from these nationalities.

Impact: Consultants must immediately stop advising students from these four countries to apply for UK student visas. Alternative routes such as Canada, Australia, or Europe should be explored. This is an ongoing rule, not a temporary measure.

UNITED KINGDOM

Settlement English Requirement Goes Up to B2

What it means: Anyone applying for indefinite leave to remain (ILR) in the UK now needs to demonstrate B2 level English under the Common European Framework, up from the previous B1 requirement. This came into effect as part of the ongoing reforms from the 2025 Immigration White Paper.

Impact: Many long-term UK residents who were planning to apply for settlement may now need to retake English tests if their current certificate is only B1. Advise clients to check their English level now before applying.

AUSTRALIA

Federal Budget Confirms 185,000 Migration Places but Shifts Strategy Toward Onshore Applicants

What it means: Australia's 2026 to 2027 Federal Budget announced on 12 May 2026 keeps the migration cap at 185,000 but now strongly prioritises applicants who are already living inside Australia. Out of the total, 129,590 places are reserved for onshore migrants. The strategy is becoming more targeted, tied closely to high-demand occupations and strong English skills.

Impact: Offshore applicants now face stiffer competition. If your client is already in Australia on a temporary visa, now is the best time to move toward permanent residency. Clients in low-demand occupations will find it harder to get selected.

GULF REGION (UAE and BAHRAIN)

GCC Unified Tourist Visa: UAE and Bahrain Begin Live Testing

What it means: While the full GCC Grand Tours unified tourist visa is still being rolled out, UAE and Bahrain have started issuing unified visas to selected low-risk tourism markets as part of a live pilot. This would eventually allow one visa for travel across all six Gulf countries including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, and Oman.

Impact: This is a big deal for the Gulf tourism industry. For now, separate visas are still required for each country. Watch this space closely as a full rollout announcement could come any time in 2026.

SWEDEN

Sweden Announces Major Immigration Overhaul: 8-Year Residency for Citizenship, Language Tests Mandatory

What it means: Sweden has officially tabled a new immigration bill titled New Rules for Labor Immigration. From 2026, the citizenship residency requirement goes up to 8 years, self-sufficiency must be demonstrated, and language tests are now mandatory. Applications will be assessed under the law at the time of decision, not submission, meaning rules can change even after you apply.

Impact: Anyone planning to use Sweden as a long-term immigration destination needs to factor in this longer timeline. Clients already in Sweden should not delay their residency applications. Also worth noting that Sweden is still trying to attract highly skilled workers and researchers with better long-term stability.

JAPAN

Japan eVisa Expanded: Now Available from 15 May 2026 for More Countries

What it means: Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expanded the eVisa system from 15 May 2026. Nationals residing in countries like Australia, Brazil, Canada, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Taiwan, UK, and USA can now apply online. India, UAE, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Indonesia are also included through a designated agency channel.

Impact: Applying for a Japan tourist visa is now faster and largely digital for most major nationalities. Advise clients accordingly and ensure they go through the official MOFA channels or accredited agencies.

No major new policy changes or big announcements reported from other countries worldwide today.

Pro Tip for Immigration Consultants

Canada's Express Entry reform consultation closed yesterday and the next draw may land this very week. This is the moment to review every client file in your Express Entry pipeline. Flag anyone in low-wage occupations, check who needs a CRS boost through language scores or provincial nominations, and begin exploring alternate pathways like the Atlantic Immigration Program or employer-driven routes. Changes in Express Entry will not wait for you to catch up. Stay ahead now.
