United Kingdom Big Alert — New Immigration and Asylum Bill Announced in King's Speech, Biggest UK Reform in Years

What it means: Yesterday at the State Opening of Parliament, the UK government announced a brand new Immigration and Asylum Bill. This is a full overhaul, not a small tweak. Key changes coming: a completely new asylum model, a single core protection status replacing multiple refugee categories, a new independent appeals body replacing the current immigration tribunal, much tougher removal enforcement, and tighter restrictions on human rights arguments used to block deportations.

Impact: Nothing changes overnight as this bill still has to pass through Parliament. But the direction is crystal clear. UK asylum cases, appeal strategies, and deportation risk profiles are all going to look very different once this passes. If you have any clients with UK asylum cases or pending tribunal appeals, flag this to your partner lawyers today. For Skilled Worker and student visa clients, rules remain unchanged for now.

Australia Big Alert — Federal Budget Drops Major Immigration Changes, Points Test Getting a Full Rewrite

What it means: Australia's Federal Budget handed down on May 12 has major immigration consequences. The permanent migration cap stays at 185,000 but the big shift is that 70% of those places (129,590) are now reserved for people already inside Australia on temporary visas. Only 55,110 offshore places remain, the smallest offshore allocation in a decade. The skilled migration points test, unchanged since 2012, is getting its first full rewrite. A consultation paper is coming in June 2026 and the new system will be in place by December 2026. Employer sponsored salary thresholds are rising from July 1: Core Skills Income Threshold goes to AUD 79,499 and Specialist Skills threshold to AUD 146,717. An 85.2 million dollar package will fast track overseas trades qualifications especially for electricians, plumbers, and construction workers.

Impact: Offshore applicants now face significantly tougher competition for fewer places. If your client is outside Australia and planning a skilled migration application, they need to move sooner rather than later. Employer clients must prepare for higher salary thresholds from July 1. The points test rewrite is the biggest story here for long term planning. Watch June for the consultation paper as it will show exactly who wins and who loses under the new system. Trades workers with construction or electrical backgrounds are getting a boost through faster skills recognition.

Canada Big Alert — CEC Express Entry Draw Expected Today, Watch IRCC Right Now

What it means: Based on IRCC's consistent two week rhythm, today May 14 is the most predicted date for the next Canadian Experience Class draw at CRS 512 to 516 with around 4,500 to 5,500 invitations. A French language draw at CRS as low as 393 is also expected close behind. No draw confirmed yet as of this morning. The Express Entry reform consultation closes May 24.

Impact: Check canada.ca right now. Every client profile between CRS 380 and 516 should already be fully updated. French language candidates at CLB 7 and above are in the strongest position this week. If the draw drops and a profile is outdated or a language test has expired, the invitation is missed. That cannot be undone.

United States Big Alert — H-1B Salary Hike Moving Fast, Junior Sponsorships Already Being Dropped

What it means: The proposed 30% H-1B minimum salary increase plus the existing 100,000 dollar petition fee is already causing companies to quietly cut entry level sponsorships. Still a proposal but employers are acting as if it is already law.

Impact: Build parallel plans for H-1B dependent clients now. Canada, UK, Australia, and Germany are all live options. Start these conversations before clients run out of time.

United States Big Alert — Asylum Fee Deadline May 29, Two Weeks Away

What it means: From May 29, every pending asylum applicant must pay a new Annual Asylum Fee or face automatic rejection. If the applicant has no other status in the US, removal proceedings begin automatically.

Impact: Check every pending I-589 file in your system this week. Clients on EADs tied to a pending asylum case are at serious risk if this fee is missed.

No major new policy changes or big announcements reported from other countries worldwide today.

Pro Tip for Immigration Consultants

Three things need your attention today. First, check IRCC right now because the Canada CEC and French language draws are expected today and being even one day slow on a profile update can cost a client their invitation. Second, if you have clients planning to apply for Australian skilled migration from offshore, the budget just made their window smaller. Only 55,110 offshore places are available this year and the points test is being rewritten by December. Tell them to start their process now, not after the new system is announced. Third, the UK Immigration and Asylum Bill announced yesterday is the most significant UK development of 2026. If you have clients with UK asylum cases or tribunal appeals, get your UK lawyer contacts on the phone today before the details of this bill are finalised.
